What can I do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and global warming?

Since the majority of greenhouse gases are created by the consumption of energy, using our resources more efficiently and decreasing our use of energy is a step in the right direction. The biggest area in which we can make a contribution is through energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency reduces emissions by using less energy to gain the same desired result or even an improved result. While energy-efficient improvements generally cost more initially, they often return their additional cost investment through substantial savings on monthly energy bills, as well as provide substantial reductions in greenhouse emissions. Some examples include replacing incandescent bulbs with fluorescent fixtures or installing energy-efficient windows at the time of new home construction. Other areas include installing the correct (cost-effective) level of insulation in a home's walls, ceilings, and floors to simple, periodic maintenance of the furnace and air-conditioning system. Also, riding a bicycle to work and carpooling are other ways to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
