Welcome to the EPA Professional Student Intern Program! This program is being offered at Kansas State University through the Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of the program is two fold:
- Increase the number and diversity of students seeking careers as future environmental professionals
- Provideon-the-job training and practical experience for students at the Radiation and Indoor Environments National Laboratory in Las Vegas, NV
Specifically, the program recruits, evaluates, trains, and provides student interns to the EPA’s Radiation and Indoor Environments (R&IE) National Laboratory in Las Vegas, Nevada. These semester or summer long internships are full-time, paid positions in the areas of:
- Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Physical Science
- Health Physics
- Computer Science
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Communications
- Public Relations

Spring 2007 Internships Overview

Radon Laboratory Internship
This position is located at the EPA’s Radiation and Indoor Environments National Laboratory (R&IE) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Specifically, the intern will be assigned to the R&IE Center for Indoor Environments, Radon Laboratory which is responsible for the EPA’s environmental justice program for radon measurement and analysis. Under the direction and guidance of laboratory staff, the intern will be responsible for researching Radon Laboratory analysis records and entry data in order to generate a report of radon results by zip code for the previous 5+ years.
Gaseous Pollutants Sampler Internship
The position will assist TAMS Center staff in the design and implementation of a mobile training and mobile sampling station that contains a complete suite of gaseous pollutant samplers (including trace gas models). Tasks involved in this internship will be to learn the operation and set-up procedure of a host of gaseous pollutant samplers, assist in the purchase and assembly of equipment to mount and properly sample from a mobile monitoring enclosure, and develop and in part deliver training for the installed equipment.
Radiochemical Methodology Development Internship
The intern selected will be assigned to advance the state-of-the-science methodology for analysis of radioisotopes, specifically Radium 226. The analysis of Radium 226 is not performed at CRQA but it is performed at the EPA’s National Air and Radiation National Laboratory (NAREL) located in Montgomery, Alabama. NAREL and R&IE are ‘sister’ laboratories governed under EPA’s Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA). NAREL and R&IE regularly share information and collaborate on radiation projects.
