Top Ten Ways Engineering Extension Serves Kansans and the Nation’s Citizens and Businesses

  • Provided technical assistance via a toll-free environmental hotline that receives more than 500 calls or inquiries each year. Nearly 50 Kansas businesses or industries are assisted each year through on-site technical assessments.
  • Provided assistance to 10 businesses in Southeast Kansas to reduce water use and waste generated using funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Identified annual savings of more than $60,000 in operating/disposal costs which were related to reductions of 652,000 gallons of water; 8,700 tons of waste; and 125,000 kWh of energy.  
  • Identified cumulative savings of more than $8.8 million in operating/disposal costs for Kansas industries participating in the PPI intern program over the past seven years. These savings are related to identified environmental outcomes that include 262 million gallons of water, 61 million kWh of electricity, and 16,000 tons of solid/hazardous waste.
  • Hosted one of the nation’s first pharmacy waste outreach programs that worked with hundreds of pharmacies and citizens, educating these groups about local alternatives to drain disposal for the sake of protecting our water resources.
  • The Kansas Radon Program has presented a total of 50 realtor continuing education (CE) courses to a total of 1,981 realtors from 2002 through 2012.
  • Assisted more than 200 clients annually with questions related to environmental permitting
  • Radon specialists respond to citizen requests from Kansas and the nation on a daily basis, with an average of 30 to 50 calls a day being processed and responses made.
  • Over 5,000 radon test kits annually are delivered to citizens across the country who purchase them to test their own home.
  • Our National Radon Program Services web site ( www.sosradon.org ) serves an average of over 100 unique visitors every day.
  • Radon measurement and mitigation training workshops and courses have been offered since 1988 and serve audiences in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas and now online across the country through our new radoncoursesonline.org web site
