Drinking Age

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. It is illegal for anyone under 21 to purchase or consume alcohol and illegal for anyone 21 or older to provide alcohol to those under 21. This rule may be different then it is in your home country, and you may need to adjust your expectations and actions for the time that you are here.

Housing

You will be housed together on K-State's campus in the Moore Hall Residential Dormitory.

Moore Hall (map) facilities are co-ed, with a female floor/wing (with a female shared bathroom down the hall) and a male floor/wing (with a male shared bathroom down the hall). There are common areas for the living/recreation room and study room which contain several TVs for general use. There will be students from several other programs on campus living on campus while you are there. You will have a chance to meet these students in the dining center during meals and as you spend time in the dorm.

Each student will share a two-person bedroom with twin beds, built-in closets, and desk space. Each individual room is equipped with a separate lock. Bedding (2 sheets, 1 pillow,  pillowcase), towels (1 hand, 1 bath, 1 washcloth), bar soap (small, hotel-sized), and a plastic glass are provided. You do not need to bring bedding or towels with you; you may want to bring your own toiletries or purchase your own when you arrive. Linens (bedding and towels) may be exchanged at the reception desk for clean items during staffed hours. The bathroom will be cleaned once a week.

The reception desk is staffed 24-7. Laundry facilities are available for $4 for two loads in the washer and two loads in the dryer. Cards for the laundry facilities can be purchased at the reception desk. You will need to provide your own detergent.

Wireless internet access is provided. Fireworks, firearms, alcohol, tobacco products, and controlled substances are restricted on campus.

Dining

Derby Dining Center is attached to Moore Hall dormitory.

Each student will be provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the dining center Monday through Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Derby hosts the daily menu (starting May 27) online. We will arrange for picnic lunches for the days we will be out of Manhattan for a field trip. Those who will be fasting for Ramadan will be able to pick up breakfast, lunch, and dinner to go in the dining center during the evening meal to be consumed when appropriate. We can also help you make arrangments to join the Islamic Center of Manhattan for breaking the fast each night. For those who wish to fast, for health and safety reasons, due to the extremely hot Kansas weather in July, we strongly encourage frequent intake of water during off-campus expeditions and will coordinate with students and advisors at the Islamic Center of Manhattan.

Sunday dinners are a great chance to eat at local restaurants or there are several major grocery sources in Manhattan:

Several restaurants within walking distance are located in Aggieville.

Religious Services

There are numerous houses of worship in Manhattan (map) if you'd like to contact a specific group for your time here, we'd be happy to help.

Cell Phones

While you are here we will provide a cell phone for each of you as a way to keep in touch during our trips. These phone will not work to call internationally and will programmed with all staff cell phones as well as emergency numbers.
