6 July

Kansas River Trip

Get outside and have some fun while taking in the riverside scenery.  The trip will begin just east of Manhattan as we go canoeing on the Big Blue River (access point mile 147 on the map), the largest tributary of the Kansas River, and end in St. George (acces point mile 137 on the map), 11.5 miles downstream.  Please wear a hat and clothes you don't mind getting wet.

Oregon Trail Exploration

Travel to local stops along the Oregon Trail.

8 July

The Land Institute

Founded in 1976, The Land Institute has become centralized around a research program in sustainable agriculture.  A non-profit research and education organization, it is comprised of 650 acres, 200 of which are hilly native and restored prairie.  Please wear closed-toe shoes.

Hutchinson Underground Salt Mine

Built in one of the world’s largest deposits of rock salt, this museum has ideal conditions to keep artifacts from history in pristine shape.  Enjoy the Dark Ride, a tram tour taking you through a maze found within the mine, and learn all about the modern day mining process alongside the physical and geological characteristics of a salt bed.

City of Greensburg

Devastated by a tornado in 2007, this city had been rebuilding on a platform that all city buildings would be built to LEED platinum standards, making it the first in the country.  Powered by 10 wind-turbines, the city is also home to the world’s largest hand-dug well, affectionately known as Big Well.

A Major League Baseball team whose home is found in Kansas City, Missouri, the Royals are celebrating their 41st anniversary at the Kauffman Stadium this year.  ‘Take me out to the ballgame’ and enjoy a time honored American tradition.
