Haskell Indian Nations University

A tribal university located in Lawrence, Kansas and founded in 1884, the school has earned a positive reputation for hosting cultural and academic events that attract visitors world-wide.  Today the school body is made up of students representing American Indian tribes from across the United States, achieving Haskell’s vision of being a national intertribal educational center. Our visit will be hosted by Dr. Daniel Wildcat of the Haskell Environmental Research Studies Program (HERS).

Manhattan Underground Railroad

Travel the Underground Railroad; on your escape from slavery you will enjoy interactive activities and learning experiences as you place yourself in the shoes of enslaved Africans, Slave Owners, and Abolitionists.  Each stop will give you more information on the time and what it was like for those using this way to freedom.

Flint Hills Discovery Center

Exploring the geology, biology, and cultural history of the Flint Hills, this Discover Center provides a unique experience that inspires visitors to become actively involved with the exhibits in exploring the Flint Hills region during their visit.

Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation

Kansas’ only nuclear power plant, since 1985 the station has been safely providing clean energy to Kansas and Missouri.  Generating enough energy for approximately 800,000 homes,  the plant sits on 10,500 acres, including a 5,090 acre cooling lake. Please bring your passport and wear long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and shirts with sleeves.

K-State Challenge Course

Created in June 2007, the K-State Challenge Course has become largely popular with groups looking to grow individual and team relationships with one another.  The staff can create a custom-designed plan to meet the unique needs of each group as they tackle the ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ that are available in a safe environment. Please where long pants, shirts with sleeves, closed-toe shoes, a hat, and water bottle.

From Anteater to Zebu, the Sunset Zoo is home to over 250 individual animals, representing more than 100 species, and includes a Rain-Garden as well as two Butterfly Gardens that guests can visit and enjoy.  Please wear shoes you feel comfortable walking in and a bottle of water.

Dialogue on Sustainability

The Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability and its partners will host the Ninth Annual Dialog on Sustainability: "Communication and Sustainability: How to Communicate Effectively to Advance Sustainability Initiatives" on Saturday, July 19, 2014 in Rathbone and Fiedler Halls at Kansas State University.  This year's dialog will focus on effective communication of sustainability concepts and ideas.
